Men Can Have Boobs Too!

Posted September 06, 2016 in Gynecomastia, Male Breast Reduction

The female body feature that men can’t stop looking at can be the same body flaw a male is too embarrassed to show off: breasts! That’s right; men can have boobs too! Although rarely discussed, excess breast tissue on a man is a characteristic of gynecomastia (overly large male breasts). Male breasts can be unflattering and may cause a man to become insecure, often keeping him from removing his t-shirt in public or wearing tight-fitting tops.

The unfortunate news is that excess breast tissue is often unresponsive to diet and exercise. Even men who lose a massive amount of weight are usually left with stubborn glandular tissue and fat in the chest area. Male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery) is an ideal solution for getting rid of your shameful “man boobs.”

How do male breasts develop?

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes men to develop excess glandular breast tissue. Excess localized fat deposits in the breast region may cause the appearance of gynecomastia but is known as pseudogynecomastia. Men can develop gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia unilaterally (in one breast) or bilaterally (in both breasts), and it can affect many different groups of men. The condition generally results from hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs and medications. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort, making many men avoid certain physical activities and intimacy. Men who are bothered by gynecomastia and have a substantial amount of breast tissue and/or fat can undergo male breast reduction surgery to alleviate physical and emotional discomfort.

What is male breast reduction surgery?

Before and After Gynecomastia SurgeryMale breast reduction surgery is designed to correct overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men. The procedure reduces breast size and enhances the male chest contours.

If a man has overly large breasts due to excess fat tissue, liposuction can be used to contour the chest. Liposuction involves the use of a thin, hollow tube (cannula) attached to a vacuum device that is used to remove fat from the body.

For men with excess glandular tissue, excision is used to remove breast tissue and skin. Incisions are made beneath the breasts within the crease and are closed using layered sutures along with surgical adhesive or surgical tape over the skin. Scarring is concealed within the natural contours of the chest.

Am I a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery?

Male breast reduction surgery is an ideal option for men whose gynecomastia cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments. Before gynecomastia correction, men should have stabilized breast development. It is important that patients are non-smokers, have realistic expectations, are physically healthy, are at a healthy weight, and do not have any active medical conditions that may be contributing to the ongoing development of recurrent breast tissue.
