Those who would like to correct eyes that appear tired, sleepy, or sad may be interested in eyelid lift surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. As one of the top five most requested cosmetic surgical procedures (according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2014 statistics), the popularity of eyelid surgery continues to grow. Eyelid surgery is designed to remove excess skin and fat along the upper eyelids to restore the contours of the eyes and to create a younger, more rejuvenated appearance. More often than not, people decide to undergo an eyelid lift to correct baggy eyes that cause an obstruction in their peripheral vision. Patients can see more clearly and improve the cosmetic appearance of their eyes when they decide on eyelid lift surgery.
What causes the eyelids to droop?
We would all love to stay young forever, but the natural aging process will eventually take hold. Starting around age 25, the elasticity of our skin decreases and the muscles beneath the skin begin to weaken, which causes excess folds of skin to appear. Everyone will age differently based on heredity, diet, and everyday habits such as smoking or drinking alcohol.
How is eyelid surgery performed?
The patient will be administered intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia for the procedure. Depending on the correction needed, the patient can undergo upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.
- Upper eyelid correction: Incisions are concealed within the natural folds of the upper eyelids.
- Lower eyelid correction: Incisions are made just below the lower lash line or hidden inside the lower eyelids.
Through the incisions, Dr. Cohn can remove excess tissue and skin and reshape the eyelid structures. Removable or absorbable sutures are used to securely close the incisions.
What is the recovery like for eyelid surgery?
Patients may experience some pain or discomfort the first 24 to 48 hours. They should reduce their amount of activity and work for the first few days. Swelling and bruising is normal for the first few weeks. Dr. Cohn will help you determine the best time to resume exercise and normal activity based on your level of healing and facial anatomy. The average patient usually goes back to work and light activities after 10 days.
